Gangryu considers clay—material that holds the opposing qualities of “soft, flexible earth shaped by water” and “ceramic hardened by intense heat”—to be the medium that best expresses herself. Moving beyond the conventional functions of ceramics, she creates motorized vertical farming systems and ceramic instruments, and presents performances that combine monologue, movement, and live sound.
“Gamadance” is the ceramic brand run by Gangryu, meaning “the dance of ceramics inside the kiln.” All of her works contract in the heat of a kiln exceeding 1,000 degrees Celsius, transforming from clay into solid ceramic. Though the finished pieces appear still, before that moment they are shaped fluidly by the artist’s hands and pass through a dancing (shrinking) duration inside the kiln, through which they finally become ceramic.

Witherless Flower is a ceramic object that began as a gift Gangryu created for her mother. The artist’s mother disliked receiving fresh flowers, as their withering felt like an ominous sign to her. In response, Gangryu sought to create a flower that would never fade and could remain over time.
The work is characterized by natural soil contained within a ceramic pot, and each piece is individually handcrafted by the artist using a hand-building technique. To date, approximately 270 unique variations of Witherless Flower have been produced, and in addition to available works, custom orders can be made in various forms and colors.
