Creator Intro

TIAMTREE echoes the spirit of traditional household objects, creating handcrafted wooden pieces designed to enrich refined daily rituals—from tea utensils and tableware to interior objects.

Serim Eom is a Korean woodcarver whose practice explores the expressive possibilities of diverse wood species in TIAMTREE.
Beginning in furniture-making before dedicating herself fully to carving in 2019, she has developed a distinctive approach that marries traditional woodturning with contemporary sculptural sensibility.

The works are rooted in slow, meditative process—removing wood fragment by fragment to reveal form. Recent pieces draw from childhood memories of rural Korea, translating the gardens and landscapes of her youth into objects that feel both ancient and contemporary.

The Wooden Case series, conceived in remembrance of the rural courtyard where she spent much of her childhood, was presented in a solo exhibition in February 2025. Through works such as Hill Case and Courtyard Case, she introduced objects that equate the act of slowly layering memories with the tactile gesture of carving.

In this exhibition, she sought to demonstrate the breadth of her practice: not only tableware, but also mirrors, jar-like vessels, and various interior objects, revealing how the tactile language of carving can inhabit diverse corners of daily life.

For her, carving is a dialogue with wood. This intimate exchange is both the singular gift of handcraft and the most elemental expression of the material’s quiet allure—an essence TIAMTREE seeks to continually reveal.

At the heart of TIAMTREE’s practice lies a deep reverence for the inherent character of wood.

ARTWORKS

The Dancheong Plate, finished in traditional ottchil lacquer, is a functional kitchenware piece inspired by motifs drawn from Dancheong, the ornate decorative patterns of Korea’s royal palaces. It embodies the lotus motif—symbolizing pure vitality and spiritual life force—alongside the Yeoui (如意) motif, which conveys a heartfelt wish for all endeavors to flourish and come to fulfillment.

Further elevated through the meticulous process of hand-carved woodcraft, the rim is shaped with chisels, leaving deliberate and vivid tool marks that honor the trace of the artisan’s hand. These sculptural textures enhance the plate’s artistic presence, evoking the natural bloom of a lotus in full flourish. The result is an everyday object transformed into a work of art—where tradition, symbolism, and craftsmanship converge in refined harmony.

The Black Jar is a hybrid creation crafted from African ebony, uniting the techniques of woodturning and woodcarving in a single sculptural form. Its silky gloss surface contrasts with the finely incised carving textures, embodying both softness in appearance and an undeniable density and weight in presence.

It holds a paradoxical allure—like an inner self patiently refined and polished to give rise to a rich and composed exterior. Evoking the image of black tears, the piece carries a quiet depth, at once restrained and profoundly expressive.

This dessert plate is inspired by the Korean traditional Dadeumitdol—a tool historically used to smooth and straighten garments.

Designed to elegantly present an individual tea or dessert setting, it is crafted in a choice of woods: walnut, maple, ebony, or Korean persimmon wood, each lending its own warmth and character to the piece.

This small plate is shaped like four gently unfolding petals. Resembling the form of a traditional Japanese single-serving side dish plate, it is named Bean Plate. It is crafted from three different types of wood.

Ideal for tea settings or dessert presentation, it can also function as an object in its own right—serving as a candle base, an accessory stand, or a sculptural resting place for personal adornments.

Amur maackia (Maackia amurensis) jar features a striking structure, with a wide, expansive central body contrasting sharply with its narrow opening and tapered base. The wood’s growth rings and natural coloration come together to create a form that, even without flowers, evokes the impression of a single blooming blossom.

This object is characterized by broad carving marks created using a large gouge. The work evokes the natural traces that birds and insects may leave on wood over time, capturing a form that remains closely aligned with nature. Its texture and shape can even bring to mind a honeycomb held gently in both hands.
