작가 소개

Hello, I am Haedeun Kim, the artist behind the brand Deumcraft.

My work centers on jewelry inspired by the formal aesthetics of traditional Korean knotting. These knots, derived from nature, embody organic forms and carry their own symbolic meanings.

In many cases, metal interpretations of traditional knots tend to focus on direct replication of their original forms. My early works also followed this approach, translating the shapes of traditional knots into decorative pieces. However, as interest in Korean tradition grew, similar approaches became increasingly prevalent. This led me to question the direction of my own practice.

As a result, I shifted my focus from simple reproduction to reinterpretation—seeking to capture the inherent flow and vitality within traditional knots and translate them into contemporary forms. At the same time, I explore structures that are difficult to achieve with conventional knotting materials, expanding the sculptural possibilities of this tradition through ongoing research.

The “Lunar Spring” series, introduced this year, marks the first collection to embody this direction. Inspired by a reimagined butterfly knot, the pieces are designed to evoke the presence of living butterflies, allowing the wearer to feel as if they themselves have become part of spring. The impression of butterflies gently landing on the ears, hands, and hair forms the central design motif of the collection.

Deumcraft began as a brand focused on daily silver jewelry rooted in traditional knotting. From the outset, I sought to express Korean tradition in a subtle and understated way—allowing it to blend naturally into everyday life. Building upon this foundation, I now aim to expand both the brand and my artistic practice, with the “Lunar Spring” series marking a turning point. While the brand continues to offer wearable, everyday designs, my work as an artist moves toward a more experimental reinterpretation of traditional elements.

In 2024, I obtained certification as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage Craftsman (Lacquer Technique), and I am currently studying mother-of-pearl inlay. I am preparing object-based works that combine lacquerware and metal, exploring the interplay of texture and light between these materials to express a more dimensional interpretation of Korean aesthetics.

At the core of my work lies the Korean folktale “The Brother and Sister Who Became the Sun and the Moon.” I begin with the question: if these figures existed in the present day, what form would their lives take? From this imagination, I develop designs that bridge the traditional and the contemporary. By envisioning not only the jewelry they might wear, but also their attire and the spaces they inhabit, I construct a narrative world that lends a sense of mystique and fantasy to my work. While my current focus is on women’s jewelry, I plan to expand into men’s jewelry and object-based works in the near future.

Rather than simply preserving tradition, my work seeks to bring it into the present—allowing it to exist as something living and evolving within contemporary time.

ARTWORKS

This ring is inspired by the traditional Korean butterfly knot, capturing the moment a living butterfly appears to gently rest upon the finger. Rather than merely reproducing the form of the knot, the work seeks to extend its sculptural qualities into a living, animated presence.

Within the Korean cultural context, the butterfly symbolizes transformation, beauty, and vitality. These meanings are translated into a contemporary visual language, where the ring band traces the imagined trajectory of the butterfly, forming an organic and continuous structure.

Although it is a single ring, it is designed to appear as if two rings are worn simultaneously, blurring the boundaries between tradition and modernity, ornament and structure. The open form allows for subtle size adjustment, incorporating a functional flexibility that complements its sculptural intent.

The piece is crafted entirely in 92.5% sterling silver. Its luminous, refined surface evokes the quality of moonlight, serving as a material that most effectively expresses the narrative world of the Lunar Spring series.

To emphasize movement and the flow of light, a pear-cut moissanite is positioned beneath the butterfly knot, accentuating a sense of dynamic motion. The brilliance of the cushion-cut and round-cut moissanites suggests stars within a lunar landscape, contributing to the work’s fantastical atmosphere. Freshwater pearls, with their soft luster, harmonize with the inherent qualities of silver, enhancing the sense of vitality and elegance throughout the piece.

Ultimately, this work moves beyond the decorative use of traditional knotting, exploring its potential as a sculptural form imbued with movement and life.

This ear cuff is based on the traditional Korean butterfly knot, capturing the moment a butterfly briefly comes to rest at the ear. Moving beyond the simple reproduction of form, the work focuses on extending the motif into a living presence situated on the body.

Drawing on the butterfly’s associations with transformation and vitality, the piece translates these qualities into a sculptural language that naturally engages with the structure of the ear. The ear cuff is positioned to anchor at the central curve of the ear, creating a sense of stability, as if the butterfly has settled into place on its own.

When worn, it evokes the impression of a butterfly gently resting on the ear. The flow of the metal and its structural composition are carefully balanced to convey both tension and equilibrium within the form.

The piece is crafted entirely in 92.5% sterling silver. Its luminous surface recalls the quality of moonlight, serving as a material expression of the narrative world embodied in the Lunar Spring series.

Centered around the butterfly knot, moissanite and freshwater pearls are arranged to emphasize the interplay of light and texture. The brilliance of the moissanite suggests stars within a lunar landscape, while the freshwater pearls introduce a sense of vitality and elegance through their contrast with the metal surface.

This ear cuff, like Lunar Spring – Perch Earcuff I, captures the moment a butterfly briefly comes to rest at the ear. Positioned along the upper curve of the ear, the butterfly maintains a subtle yet distinct presence, forming a sculptural element that naturally integrates with the body.

The body of the ear cuff is designed with a relatively slender structure to facilitate secure placement, allowing it to be gently pressed and adjusted to fit the contour of the ear.

A defining feature of this piece is its detachable chain element. When worn without the chain, the form remains restrained and minimal; when attached, it extends into a more expressive and dynamic composition. This duality allows the piece to shift between two distinct visual states within a single work.

For the bonded pearl setting, nucleus-based pearls are used to ensure consistency in form and to minimize potential variations during fixation. This contributes to both the structural stability and the overall refinement of the piece.

This earring is based on the traditional Korean butterfly knot, translating the trace of a butterfly as it passes along the ear into a sculptural form. Rather than reproducing the butterfly’s shape, the work focuses on extending its movement and afterimage as a presence on the body.

Drawing on the butterfly’s associations with transformation and vitality, the form is reinterpreted as a structure that follows the natural curve of the ear. The composition wraps gently around the ear, visualizing the path of the butterfly’s movement and creating a continuous sculptural flow when worn.

While it appears similar to an ear cuff, the piece is worn as an earring, offering both stability and an alternative mode of adornment. This approach proposes jewelry not as a suspended object, but as a form that engages with and extends along the body.

The brilliance of the moissanite suggests stars within a lunar landscape, while the freshwater pearls introduce a soft, living contrast to the cool surface of the metal.

This necklace is based on the traditional Korean butterfly knot, translating the flowing movement found in nature into a sculptural form. The repeated arrangement of butterfly knots and freshwater pearls establishes a rhythmic composition, emphasizing a sense of natural beauty.

White topaz stones are incorporated to highlight the reflection and transmission of light, evoking the moment a butterfly is drawn to light and comes to rest. The presence of freshwater pearls introduces a soft vitality, enhancing the overall sense of fluidity and organic balance within the piece.

The reverse side of the necklace is finished with a chrysanthemum knot, adding a subtle reference to East Asian aesthetics. A freshwater pearl suspended beneath the knot moves gently along the chain, creating a soft, wind-like motion. This detail responds to the wearer’s movement, introducing a sense of time and flow into an otherwise static form.

The piece is crafted entirely in 92.5% sterling silver, with all pearls made of freshwater pearls. The luminous quality of silver recalls moonlight, serving as a material extension of the narrative embodied in the Lunar Spring series.

This bracelet is conceived as a counterpart to the necklace within the Lunar Spring series. Based on the traditional Korean butterfly knot, it translates the flowing rhythm found in nature into a form that unfolds across the wrist. The repeated arrangement of butterfly knots and freshwater pearls establishes a measured cadence, creating a sculptural flow that responds subtly to movement.

White topaz stones are incorporated to emphasize the reflection and transmission of light, catching the motion of the wrist with a delicate sparkle. This interplay evokes the fleeting trace of a butterfly in motion. The presence of freshwater pearls adds a soft vitality, bringing balance and a sense of organic continuity to the piece.

While sharing the same formal language as the necklace, the bracelet is adapted to the specific characteristics of the wrist, resulting in a more flexible and closely fitted structure. Elements that move gently with the wearer introduce a sense of temporality and fluidity, allowing the piece to shift subtly within everyday gestures.

The piece is crafted entirely in 92.5% sterling silver, with all pearls made of freshwater pearls. The luminous quality of silver recalls moonlight, serving as a material extension of the narrative embodied in the Lunar Spring series.

This ring is based on the traditional Korean butterfly knot, extending beyond a static form to capture the movement of a living butterfly. A spring mechanism is incorporated, allowing the butterfly’s wings to fold and unfold, creating the impression of a living presence, as if the butterfly is gently breathing.

When worn, it evokes the moment a butterfly comes to rest on the finger. The bold form of the butterfly knot delivers a mysterious and visually striking sculptural experience.

The structure is inspired by a hair clip mechanism, allowing the ring to be worn without size constraints. Its adjustable form adapts flexibly to the wearer’s finger, enhancing both comfort and versatility while simultaneously embodying sculptural and functional expansion.

The listed price corresponds to the version crafted in 92.5% sterling silver. A gold-plated brass version is also available at KRW 190,000.

This work goes beyond using traditional knotting as a decorative element, seeking instead to expand it into a form that embodies movement and responsiveness.

This hairpin is based on the traditional Korean butterfly knot, capturing the moment a butterfly cuts through the air in flight. Moving beyond the static nature of conventional adornment, the piece seeks to fix a fleeting instant of motion above the head.

The butterfly knot positioned at the top is rendered with its wings partially folded, conveying the tension of a moment just before takeoff or a sudden change in direction. Rather than a literal representation, it compresses a fragment of time into a sculptural form.

The elongated linear structure of the hairpin visualizes the trajectory of the butterfly’s movement, creating a sense of directional flow as it passes through the hair. When worn, it evokes the impression of a trace left behind, as if the butterfly has just brushed past.

The piece is crafted in brass and finished with plating. The inherent rigidity of the metal is balanced with organic curves, extending the traditional knot form into a more dimensional and dynamic sculptural expression.

This hairpin captures the precise moment in which the traditional Korean Saengjok knot is formed. The Saengjok knot, named for its resemblance to a sliced piece of ginger, has traditionally symbolized joy and delight. Drawing from this meaning, the work seeks to embody the condensed instant just before an emotion fully unfolds.

The knot positioned at the top of the hairpin reflects the tension and balance of a form on the verge of completion. Rather than presenting a fixed and finished structure, it reveals a transitional state—an instant in which emotion takes shape and becomes visible.

By translating this knot into metal, the work transforms what is typically a flexible, thread-based structure into a solid form, allowing it to function as a wearable hairpin. In this way, the piece moves beyond ornamentation, fixing a moment of joy as a tangible presence upon the body.

The elongated linear form of the hairpin extends this moment outward, suggesting a sense of upward movement and expansion. When worn, it evokes the impression of joy unfolding and radiating beyond a single point in time.

This necklace is part of the Obsidian Bloom series, centered around the traditional Korean Chrysanthemum knot and articulated through the interplay of contrasting materials. The combination of black tiger’s eye and white mother-of-pearl establishes a balance between darkness and light, creating a restrained yet distinct visual presence.

Positioned at the core of the composition, the Chrysanthemum knot embodies a dense and orderly structure that retains its traditional character while contributing to the overall sculptural integrity of the piece. It functions not merely as an ornamental detail, but as the central axis of the design.

The sequence of beads—alternating between black tiger’s eye and white mother-of-pearl—forms a measured rhythm that follows the contour of the neckline. A portion of the necklace transitions into a sterling silver chain, introducing both material contrast and structural variation within the composition.

The chain is fitted with a silicone slider, allowing the length to be adjusted according to the wearer’s preference. This detail integrates functional flexibility into the overall sculptural design.

This crawler earring is centered around the traditional Korean Chrysanthemum knot, forming a new sense of tension on the body through a linear structure. The slender silver bar extends from the helix to the earlobe, cutting across the ear as a single line and proposing a mode of adornment that intervenes structurally rather than simply following the contours of the body.

Positioned at the center, the Chrysanthemum knot maintains its traditional aesthetic through its dense form while creating a strong visual focal point in contrast to the linear element. Beneath it, a moissanite accent introduces a subtle balance to the tension of the structure through its reflective brilliance.

Constructed not from soft curves but from a clear axis and defined lines, this piece presents a distinct sculptural direction from conventional jewelry. When worn, the linear form draws the eye along the ear, creating a presence that is both bold and refined.

The piece is crafted entirely in 92.5% sterling silver. The material’s luminous clarity enhances the linear structure, reinforcing the solid and defined impression of the overall form.
